Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a method in which a weak direct current influences the functioning of brain cells.
By placing electrodes on the scalp, a specific part of the brain is stimulated. Only part of the administered current will reach the cerebral cortex, as the scalp and skull form a resistance barrier. Nevertheless, the strength of the direct current that reaches the brain cells is sufficient to influence the load of neurons.
A positive electrode has an excitatory effect on underlying neurons. The brain cells become more sensitive so that they can 'fire' more easily and quickly. A negative electrode has just the opposite effect. The activity of the underlying brain cells decreases, so they “fire” less and transmit less information.
To achieve an effect, 2 to 3 stimulations per week are performed. Only after 5 to 6 sessions can it be evaluated whether the stimulation will influence the symptoms. A complete treatment consists of at least 8 to 12 stimulations. To maintain the effect, the frequency of the stimulations is gradually reduced after an intensive treatment period.
At various points in the treatment process, the clinical effect is discussed during a follow-up consultation.
If necessary, a qEEG control will be carried out.
Two or more moist sponge electrodes are placed on the scalp and attached with a rubber elastic band or a mesh bandage. The position of the electrodes depends on the stimulation zone and the intended purpose of the stimulation.
TDCS is not painful, although you feel slight tingling on the skin under the electrode during stimulation. TDCS has no serious side effects. During a tDCS session, the patient sits in a comfortable chair.
To achieve an effect, 2 to 3 stimulations per week are performed. Only after 4 to 5 sessions can it be evaluated whether the stimulation will influence the symptoms. A complete treatment consists of at least 8 to 10 stimulations. In the case of chronic disorders, it is sometimes necessary to repeat these stimulations at regular intervals.
TDCS can be used for tinnitus, depression, CFS, fibromyalgia, burnout, chronic pain,...
