Hyperacusis

In hyperacusis, normal sounds are perceived as painful and extremely disturbing. The cause of hyperacusis is still unclear. Further research into its mechanism is therefore necessary. The mechanism of action is probably very similar to that of tinnitus.

What is it?

There are different types of hyperacusis.

Loudness Hyperacusis:

Normal noises are perceived as extremely loud.

Noxacusis

Noises, even at low levels, can cause ear pain. The pain is often described as burning, stinging, throbbing, or pressing and may occur immediately or with a delay after exposure.

Misophonia

Certain sounds such as smacking, breathing, swallowing, etc. can cause intense disgust and disgust. In some cases, the reaction is so strong that it leads to anger or panic attacks.

How to treat

An understandable but completely wrong reaction from people who suffer from hyperacusis is to wear earplugs during daily life. By shutting the ears off from ordinary everyday noises, the severity of the hypersensitivity only increases. It is necessary to re-expose the auditory system to sounds. In this way, the central processing (by the brain) of the stimuli can normalize again.

When the cause of hyperacusis can be determined, treatment will focus on this. Often, the reason for the development of hyperacusis is not so clear.

By influencing the functioning of the brain with neuromodulation, we can, in a number of cases, reduce the hyperacusis symptoms. A qEEG can help us determine which neuromodulation technique could have the most effect.
