Non-invasive neuromodulation, if properly supervised, is not dangerous and has few side effects. Most people tolerate the stimulations very well.
During a TES treatment, you may notice slight tingling and warmth under the electrode.
It is possible that flashes of light are noticed during TES procedures, especially TRNS or TACS. That is completely normal. One explanation for this phenomenon is that current enters the retina. Because the retina is a particularly sensitive organ, potential differences will result in a flash of light.
After stimulation, the feeling of warmth, the tingling or the flashes of light disappeared again.
Some people experience some tiredness or mild headache after stimulation, which is a normal phenomenon and is transient.
Very rarely, a small galvanic skin lesion of a few millimeters in size can occur. This is due to the conduction of the current to a too small point on the electrode. People with very sensitive skin are more susceptible to this phenomenon.
To prevent such a burn, the electrodes are regularly renewed and the sponges are sufficiently soaked with salt water.
TMS is a stimulation that generates a powerful magnetic field. The stimulation triggers an action potential and therefore has an influence on the underlying muscles and peripheral nerve tracts. As a result, TMS does not feel so comfortable. The first pulsations are certainly annoying, after a few minutes you get used to the stimulus and the stimulation is easy to tolerate. TMS does cause more headaches than TES treatments.
Neurofeedback has no side effects.
Extra care should be taken with implants on or in the head, such as Baha hearing aids, cochlear implants, VPS shunt, brain electrodes, and aneurysm clips.
A pacemaker or a Baclofen pump is not a contraindication.
Epilepsy is a contraindication for certain forms of stimulation.
Pregnancy in itself is not a contraindication. Because the effect of neuromodulation on the unborn child is not well known, stimulation is not carried out during the pregnancy period, but neurofeedback treatments are not a problem.
